Meeting between US-Africa leaders offers critical opportunity for partnership

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump will host leaders from five African nations – Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal – this week to discuss “commercial opportunities.” The President previously announced plans to host a larger US-Africa Summit later this year.

“We’re hopeful this first convening of African leaders in Washington will promote closer, stronger partnerships with our allies on the continent and lead to win-win commercial deals that spur economic development and create new jobs,” said Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Director of North America at the ONE Campaign.

“In the wake of dramatic cuts to foreign aid, and looming additional reductions to successful programs like PEPFAR, this summit is an opportunity for the Trump Administration to show they are not only about unilateral cuts, but to make real their vision for what a revised US-Africa relationship can be: A relationship which provides mutually beneficial economic opportunities.”
