ONE Statement on Reported Changes to the Millennium Challenge Corporation

WASHINGTON – The ONE Campaign released the following statement on reports that all Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) programs will be closed, with no new programming expected.

Established with strong bipartisan support from Congress in 2004, MCC has – through private investment – helped provide electricity for millions and has partnered with local governments to build thousands of miles of roads, enabling people access to vital job opportunities and global economic growth. Additionally, it takes an important partnership approach with compact countries, aligning assistance with the recipient country’s development priorities ensuring maximum impact.

“ONE is alarmed by reports that the Millennium Challenge Corporation may soon be dissolved,” said Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Director for North America at ONE.  “MCC brings an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to development assistance that holds governments accountable and effectively counters malign foreign influences like China, for the benefit of America’s interests around the world.

“To abruptly eliminate its programming would be self-defeating. ONE urges Congress to ensure MCC’s track record of success continues at this crucial moment for America’s future.”
