WASHINGTON — The ONE Campaign today welcomed confirmation that the U.S. Department of State will contribute the full $600 million appropriated by Congress in fiscal years 2025 and 2026 to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

“This is great news on so many fronts,” said Ambassador Mark Green (ret.), ONE’s President and CEO. “In releasing these funds, the Administration is making clear that the world can count on American leadership in tackling global challenges. Just as importantly, it keeps American companies and scientists at the center of the effort to help partner countries build and ultimately fund their own immunization systems. I am grateful to the Administration and the members of Congress who helped see this through.”

“Gavi has never been simply an aid program,” Green continued. “It is a collaboration that accelerates self-reliance in the development of important public health tools in partner countries. Nineteen countries have already graduated from Gavi support and now run their own programs. Releasing this $600 million keeps that progress moving at a moment when children cannot afford a pause.”

The funds, $300 million from each fiscal year, had not been disbursed and were due to expire on September 30. Their release follows sustained engagement by a bipartisan group of members across both chambers of Congress, including Senate and House appropriations leadership: Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-ME), Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), and Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL).

The United States helped found Gavi in 2000, alongside the World Health Organization, the World Bank, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation. Since then, the Alliance has helped vaccinate more than 1.2 billion children against 20 diseases and has prevented an estimated 20.6 million deaths. Gavi’s model is built around country ownership, with recipient governments progressively increasing their own contributions until they fund their immunization programs entirely.

Gavi has been part of ONE’s policy agenda for more than a decade, and a central focus of ONE’s Power Summit advocacy since 2020, first as a replenishment campaign, then in support of Gavi’s role in the global COVID-19 response, and most recently in defense of its funding. Over that period ONE’s volunteer advocates have sent thousands of handwritten letters to Congress and the administration and held hundreds of in-district meetings with their representatives.

The restored U.S. contribution will likely support vaccine stockpiles, scale up malaria and polio vaccine distribution, reduce the cost of Ebola vaccine trials and eventual rollout, and fund development of longer-lasting vaccine technologies. Gavi secured $9 billion in pledges for its 2026 to 2030 funding period, short of its $11.9 billion target.
