Google’s Data Commons, ONE Campaign announce new global data partnership

NEW YORK – The ONE Campaign and Google today announced a global partnership between their two data platforms – Data Commons and ONE’s data and analysis site data.one.org.

The partnership will enable users to harness the power of AI to access and make sense of vast amounts of data on global economic, political, and social topics. That data can help point out gaps and trends that support advocacy for equality, global economic and development trends, and the world’s progress towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The new platform, ONE Data Commons, will enable anyone, anywhere to access data on these issues, explore connections between data sets, and create and share compelling data visualizations that help us better understand the world in which we live. The data will also further enhance ONE’s efforts to produce research and analysis that aim to address critical policy challenges.

Gayle Smith, CEO of The ONE Campaign, said: “Data is critical to our advocacy because it sharpens our analyses and shapes better policies, and we are thrilled to partner with Google on this critical project. Data is not just about the numbers, it’s about empowering people to explore and unpack issues, amplify their voices, and act together to make change happen. We’re confident the data available on this platform will inspire and enable creative collaborations to build a better future.”

James Manyika, Senior Vice President, Research, Technology & Society at Google, said: “We believe that AI has tremendous potential to accelerate progress toward the SDGs. Some recent advances have made it easier to use AI to move the SDGs forward, including improved AI techniques, increased and more inclusive tech deployments, more funding, increased AI talent and innovations by people and NGOs on the ground, and data collaborations. We are so heartened by our collaboration with the ONE Campaign to create ONE Data Commons, as well as our work with the United Nations, to make data more accessible and advance work to meet the SDGs.”

Background

In 2022, The ONE Campaign launched data.one.org, which compiles the latest data and analysis on the economic, political, and social changes impacting Africa. This research has been cited in speeches from heads of state, in outlets like TIME Magazine and the Financial Times, and has helped shape policy and funding decisions. Our analysis explores pivotal questions, like how African countries can drive climate change solutions; how MDB reform can mobilize a trillion dollars for development; or who pays the real price for rising interest rates
