Dallas Becomes the 60th City to Join in the Fight Against Global Aids & Extreme Poverty with ONE Campaign

Dallas, Texas –Today, Dallas Mayor Laura Miller joins ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History in proclaiming Dallas a “City of ONE”.  Dallas joins 59 other cities and five states that have become “Cities and States of ONE” in support of the ONE Campaign to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty.

“Healthy people and healthy communities are the centerpiece of any strong and vibrant society,” said Mayor Miller.  “The people of the City of Dallas have always been known for their generosity, and we are proud to join the fight against extreme poverty and global AIDS.  Together with cities across our own country, we are taking action and bringing hope to people in some of the world’s poorest countries.”

ONE is an effort by Americans to rally Americans to fight the emergency of extreme poverty and global AIDS. Today, over 1 billion people around the world live on less than $1 a day and over 24 million people in Africa are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus, approximately 2 million of whom are children

ONE members ask America do even more to lead the world in bringing hope and opportunity to the world’s poorest people.  Through ONE.org and working on the ground in communities, colleges and churches in all 50 states, ONE members ask America’s leaders to increase efforts to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty, from the U.S budget and G8 summits to debt cancellation, increasing effective international assistance, making trade fair and fighting corruption.

“Fighting extreme poverty and global AIDS around the world is something we can all do together here at home,” said Kim Smith, Regional Field Organizer for ONE.  “With more than 100,000 ONE supporters across the state, the people of Texas are helping to save and change the lives in Africa and the world’s poorest countries.”

Hudson Oaks and Weatherford also stand with Dallas as “Cities of ONE” in Texas.  Dallas is the 60th “City of ONE” in the United States”
