An Evening for Sudan: A Powerful Kick-Off to Africa Day 2025

On April 9, 2025, in the heart of Berlin, ONE Germany launched its Africa Day celebrations with An Evening for Sudan — a moving and politically charged event that sparked connection, urgency, and action. Co-hosted with UNICEF, Ubuntu Circle member Niddal Salah-Eldin, and the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion and Reconciliation, the evening brought much-needed attention to Sudan’s escalating humanitarian crisis.

More than 100 invited guests — including journalists, cultural leaders, policymakers, and civil society partners — gathered to listen, reflect, and respond. The panel blended sharp political analysis with personal stories, featuring Volker Perthes, former UN envoy to Sudan; activist Düzen Tekkal; UNICEF Germany’s CEO Christian Schneider; and journalist Niddal Salah-Eldin. Actor Lenn Kudrjawizki brought Sudanese photographer Ala Kheir’s war diary to life, while acclaimed author Navid Kermani shared a poetic reflection on his travels through Sudan.

The evening also marked the launch of ONE’s new #StandWithSudan campaign, calling for stronger international solidarity and sustained attention on Sudan’s crisis. Supported by a joint appeal with UNICEF, the campaign gained immediate momentum as public figures like Düzen Tekkal, Niddal Salah-Eldin, Carolin Kebekus, Michael Mittermeier, Culcha Candela, Bruder Stève and others shared the campaign on their channels, helping it reach tens of thousands.

The event was not only a call to action but a celebration of Sudanese dignity, resilience, and culture — with Sudanese food, music, and stories filling the room. ONE Germany will continue to spotlight Sudan throughout Africa Day 2025, with a focus on elevating female voices and advancing meaningful advocacy for the continent’s future.

The evening marked the German launch of ONE’s new campaign #StandWithSudan – calling for stronger international attention, protection, and solidarity. As part of this broader effort, ONE and UNICEF issued a joint appeal to raise awareness and drive political will to stay engaged in strong development cooperation.
