PEPFAR

ONE called upon Members of Congress to maintain support for PEPFAR and the fight against HIV/AIDS.

ONE recognized 20 years of PEPFAR by thanking Members of Congress for their historic support and by bringing awareness to the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. ONE and our supporters urged elected officials to continue to support PEPFAR and other life-saving global health programs.

Since its launch in 2003, the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has played a critical role in the fight against the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, saving over 26 million lives.

However, political tensions stalled PEPFAR’s reauthorization in 2023, and foreign aid cuts raise further concerns about the program’s future. ONE staff and advocates quickly mobilized to make sure PEPFAR has the resources it needs to fulfill its mission – a generation free of HIV/AIDS.

Impact

  • Secured bipartisan recognition of – and support for – PEPFAR’s legacy.
  • Sustained public and political momentum for PEPFAR’s continued existence, demonstrated by widespread grassroots activation.

What We Did

  • At the annual Bonnaroo festival in 2023, we collected 1,656 handwritten, personalized letters to Congress in support of PEPFAR.
  • We delivered Valentine’s cards to more than 100 members of key congressional committees, thanking them for 20 years of PEPFAR support.
  • We held dozens of meetings with Members of Congress both in-district and on Capitol Hill to build support.
  • We launched a blog series and video content to tell the story of PEPFAR story and highlight its lifesaving impact.
