UK: The Thousand Mile Cake

A birthday cake with 5 candles, surrounded by confetti

The Thousand Mile Cake

This September, ONE is travelling 1,000 miles across the length and breadth of the UK with a giant birthday cake. We’re bringing together two things we all love, cake and a road trip, to start a conversation about something much bigger. A future where every child and young person can survive, thrive and reach their full potential.

Every child is born to live

Born to Live is ONE’s global campaign for a future where children and young people everywhere have the chance to survive, thrive and reach their full potential.

Every year millions of children still die before their fifth birthday from causes we know how to prevent and for those who do survive, too many young people are denied the opportunities they need to thrive.

We know what works. What we need now is the political will to invest in children and young people and make their futures a priority.

That’s why we’re taking Born to Live on the road, building support across the UK and calling on the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham to act.

Ask Andy Burnham to make children and young people’s futures Britain’s mission:

Why a road trip?

Everyone loves cake. Everyone loves a good road trip. We’re combining the two.

Our giant birthday cake is travelling more than 1,000 miles across the four corners of the UK, carrying 1,826 candles, one for every day of a child’s life until their fifth birthday.

From Glasgow to Manchester, Portmeirion to Margate, at every stop people will add candles, decorations and messages of hope. The cake will change as it travels, becoming a colourful, collective symbol of the future people across the country want for children and young people.

By the time it reaches its finale on the River Thames in Westminster, London, it will carry messages of support from people across the UK.
