Yvette Cooper appointed Foreign Secretary: ONE Campaign reaction

LONDON, UK – Friday, September 5, 2025 – The ONE Campaign has reacted to the appointment of Yvette Cooper as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

Adrian Lovett, the UK Executive Director of the ONE Campaign, urged the new Foreign Secretary to fight to reverse the 40% (roughly £6 billion) cut to the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget – arguing that international aid has a ‘staggering lifesaving impact for such a relatively small outlay’.

Adrian Lovett, UK Executive Director of the ONE Campaign said:

“Today’s reshuffle has given the Prime Minister and the new Foreign Secretary a critical opportunity to fight to reverse the misguided 40% cut to international aid.

“Yvette Cooper brings a wealth of experience to her new role, with a record of standing up for equality and for Britain’s role as a force for good. International aid is one of the most cost-effective investments the UK can make. For less than 1% of national income it helps to prevent the spread of deadly diseases, educate the world’s most vulnerable people and build global stability. It is a staggering lifesaving impact for such a relatively small outlay.

“And yet, this government is on course to be the biggest cutter of international aid on record, undermining the safety, prosperity and health of millions at home and abroad.

“Restoring the aid budget would send a clear signal that the UK is ready to lead again on the world stage. We urge Yvette Cooper to seize this moment and stand up for the best of British values.”
