UK G20 presidency in 2027 must put people and planet first with ‘summit for hope’
Johannesburg, South Africa – November 22, 2025 – The UK should prioritise economic opportunities and healthier lives for all in its G20 presidency in 2027, the ONE Campaign has said.
Today, leaders at the current G20 summit in South Africa announced that the UK will assume the leadership of the G20 in 2027, after the United States hosts the global gathering in 2026.
Speaking from the G20 summit in Johannesburg, Adrian Lovett, Executive Director for the UK, Middle East and Asia Pacific at the ONE Campaign, said:
“The UK’s G20 presidency in 2027 must be a summit for hope – one that puts people and the planet first. Global crises and widening inequalities are driving division and eroding trust in global institutions. This is an opportunity to restore a sense of shared purpose and values in a fractured world. A presidency grounded in partnership, ambition and fairness would make 2027 a turning point for renewed global cooperation.
“The 2027 G20 presidency must build on the foundations of this year’s summit in South Africa. Africa is home to the youngest population in the world, and unlocking its economic potential will be critical to solving the challenges of this century.
“The UK should build on that momentum by addressing the structural issues holding back human flourishing – from the unjustly high cost of borrowing for African countries, to inadequate public health systems, and the burden of climate shocks on vulnerable communities.”
