UK government’s new ‘Africa Approach’: The right words but they must be matched by action
London, UK – 15/12/2025 – The UK government has laid out its new ‘Africa Approach’, encompassing aid, migration, health, climate and peacebuilding.
Reacting to a speech today by the International Development Minister, Baroness Chapman, Adrian Lovett, Executive Director for the UK, Middle East and Asia Pacific at the ONE Campaign, said:
“The UK’s new Africa Approach finds the right words and the right strategies for the moment we are in. It echoes Africa’s priorities and positions the UK as a partner to help achieve those ambitions. This is a welcome recognition that partner nations must stand alongside African leadership in solidarity, as the continent shapes its own future.
“The true test of the Africa Approach is implementation, and whether Africa is prioritised in the UK’s Official Development Assistance and wider investment decisions. In the initial allocations of the FCDO’s reduced budget this year, funds for Africa were cut more deeply than elsewhere. This trend must be reversed.
“If ministers match words with action, we could see a much stronger partnership that leads to real economic opportunities and healthier lives for people across the African continent. That isn’t just in Africa’s interests – it’s good for all of us.”
