ONE Campaign urges follow-up by leaders after ‘a summit like no other’
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – 23 NOVEMBER, 2025 – The ONE Campaign has reacted to the conclusion of the 2025 G20 Leaders Summit.
Serah Makka, Africa Executive Director of ONE, said:
“This summit was like no other. Never before have world leaders gathered in Africa and focused this closely on issues that matter to millions of Africans, as well as to people everywhere. The South African presidency should be congratulated on bringing a spirit of Ubuntu to these discussions as well as measured and collaborative diplomacy – much needed in an increasingly divided world.
“While we would like to have seen more concrete commitments in the leaders’ final declaration, we welcome the report of the G20 experts group to highlight the excessive cost of vital capital investment for many African governments, and the debt burden that deprives too many countries of the means to invest in building healthier lives and economic opportunities for their people. This report must be seen as a blueprint for transformation. We welcome the new Africa Engagement Framework to ensure the international constraints to Africa’s economic future are addressed in a sustained way by the G20 in the years ahead. This initiative should ensure that the experts’ recommendations are implemented without delay.”
Adrian Lovett, Executive Director, UK, Middle East and Asia Pacific for ONE, said:
“With this summit, South Africa has given us grounds for hope. It has highlighted extreme inequality, defended international law, and insisted on the value of international cooperation and partnership. We now need to see this momentum sustained. Leaders confirmed that the UK and Korea will join the list of G20 summit hosts in the coming years. We look to future hosts to ensure that the energy unleashed in Johannesburg is used to drive towards concrete outcomes that help build healthier lives and economic opportunities – in Africa, and around the world.”
