G7 Summit: ONE calls for emergency support to counter oil shock and increased investment in global health

As the G7 Summit starts today in Évian, France, the development organization ONE is calling on G7 leaders to help bring the Ebola epidemic in Central Africa under control. It also urges the G7 to address the global economic fallout from the war in the Middle East and the resulting oil shock. Many African countries are particularly hard hit, with millions of people at risk of being pushed further into hunger and poverty.

Khalil Elouardighi, France Director at ONE, said: “If the G7 want to remain relevant, they must respond to the crises of our time. The oil shock is hitting Africa particularly hard. The G7 must not allow millions of people to pay the price for a war they did not cause.”

ONE is calling on G7 countries to provide emergency financing to the hardest-hit countries to help them mitigate the impact of rising energy and food prices. It also urges G7 leaders to reactivate the covid-era debt suspension initiative, and to ask international financial institutions to develop debt restructuring solutions for the most affected low-income countries.

On the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa, Elouardighi said: “Ebola is a reminder that diseases do not respect borders. Cutting back on global health spending risks the next crisis. How many Ebola outbreaks will it take before we understand that investing in global health is in our own interest? The G7 must once again increase, not reduce, investment in health and development cooperation.”

ONE is calling on G7 countries to significantly step up investment in health security. This should include strengthening health systems in fragile states, as well as increasing support for institutions such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Both play a crucial role in helping contain the current Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.
