G7: ONE welcomes recognition of Ebola crisis, but concrete action is missing

At the G7 Summit in Évian, leaders acknowledged the need for a joint response to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa. The development organization ONE says this recognition must now be backed by concrete measures and stronger investment in global health security.

Khalil Elouardighi, France Director at ONE, says: “It’s positive that the G7 is finally responding to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa. But words alone won’t stop a virus. G7 leaders now need to match their rhetoric with action and invest in and support the work of institutions such as the Africa CDC, Global Fund, Gavi and CEPI, which have repeatedly proven their value in responding to outbreaks and health crises.”

ONE is calling on G7 countries to significantly step up investment into the health infrastructure needed on the ground to detect outbreaks as they emerge and control them before they become large-scale epidemics. This should include strengthening health systems in fragile states, as well as increasing support for institutions such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Both play a crucial role in helping protect locals and the world from the current Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.
