ONE welcomes the European Parliament’s commitment to end poverty and lead on the Sustainable Development Agenda

Brussels – The European Parliament voted to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to achieve the 0.7% of GNI to development aid in the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) at the Plenary session at Strasbourg. The amendment to include a mention of 0.7% GNI/ODA in the European Parliament’s MFF Interim report received an overwhelming support from the Plenary.

Friederike Röder, EU and France Director at The ONE Campaign, said in response to the European Parliament’s vote:

“It is very encouraging to see how the European Parliament took this opportunity to reaffirm EU’s commitment to end extreme poverty by 2030.

EU’s leadership to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is needed to make sure no one is left behind. EU citizens are calling for this: 9 in 10 EU citizens think we should support people in developing countries.

Now it’s up to European leaders to make this commitment a reality when deciding on the next EU budget at the European Council in December. If the EU is serious about meeting the international 0.7% GNI/ODA target by 2030, European leaders need to increase EU aid to €140bn in the next EU budget.”
