Sometimes they begin on a basketball court, in a locker room, on a soccer field, or through the voice of an athlete whose story reaches millions of people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That is why it is not surprising to me as&nbsp;a former college athlete&nbsp;that&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ey.com\/content\/dam\/ey-unified-site\/ey-com\/en-au\/campaigns\/athlete-programs\/documents\/ey-where-will-you-find-your-next-leader.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>94% of C-suite women<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;played sports at one point in their lives<\/strong>. Looking back, the biggest lessons I learned were not about winning championships,&nbsp;although&nbsp;I do enjoy&nbsp;the&nbsp;bragging&nbsp;rights. They were about leadership, resilience, staying healthy, accountability, and believing in myself that&nbsp;I could do hard things.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been years since I last wore&nbsp;a uniform&nbsp;but the&nbsp;further&nbsp;I get from my playing days,&nbsp;the&nbsp;more&nbsp;I recognize&nbsp;those&nbsp;lessons are universal.&nbsp;<strong>Around the world, sport often becomes one of the first places young people discover their own potential<\/strong>. It also gives people one of their first experiences of belonging&nbsp;as an athlete, a teammate, or a fan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports open the door. It captures attention&nbsp;and&nbsp;builds&nbsp;community. But it&nbsp;also&nbsp;creates&nbsp;moments that make people curious enough to hear a much bigger story.&nbsp;Here at ONE, we have brought&nbsp;that&nbsp;idea&nbsp;to life by&nbsp;highlighting&nbsp;Africa&#8217;s&nbsp;innovation, creativity, talent, and&nbsp;opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-nbsp-power-of-nbsp-sports-on-and-off-the-field-nbsp\"><strong>The&nbsp;power of&nbsp;sports: On and off the field<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the sidelines of WNBA All Star weekend, ONE co-hosted\u00a0an event called\u00a0Court of Change with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/peaceplayers.org\/\">PeacePlayers\u00a0International<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/noahssarcfdn.org\/\">Noah&#8217;s Arc Foundation<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0celebrate\u00a0women\u00a0using sport to expand opportunities for girls around the world.\u00a0Our honorees,\u00a0Candace Parker, Chiney Ogwumike, Sandra Idehen, and Fatima Graves have\u00a0all\u00a0taken different paths, but each\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0how investing in girls creates ripple effects that extend far beyond\u00a0the hardwood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the discussion, speaker after speaker returned to the same idea: sport&nbsp;doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;simply produce athletes.&nbsp;It produces leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It&#8217;s all of our\u00a0responsibilities\u00a0to pay it forward. To make sure that our kids and our young girls believe in themselves, whether it&#8217;s through a game or whether it&#8217;s through leadership.&#8221; \u2014 Candace Parker\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Those same values sit at the heart of ONE&#8217;s work. It is the result of decades of athletes, advocates, investors, and leagues refusing to accept that women&#8217;s potential was limited by the size of&nbsp;previous&nbsp;investments. That lesson extends well beyond sports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s&nbsp;also why we launched&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/futuremakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Futuremakers.<\/a>&nbsp;Through entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, health workers, and athletes,&nbsp;Futuremakers&nbsp;tells a different story about Africa: one centered on innovation, leadership, and opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on her work with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/about\/creative-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ONE&#8217;s Diaspora Creative Council<\/a>, Chiney Ogwumike described traveling across Africa to meet entrepreneurs, artists, and changemakers whose stories deserve a global audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My mom has a saying: tiny drops of water make a mighty ocean.&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0Chiney\u00a0Ogwumike\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Her message was simple but powerful: changing&nbsp;perceptions&nbsp;doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;happen&nbsp;all at once. Young people come because they want to\u00a0play\u00a0and\u00a0they stay because trusted adults become mentors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same philosophy was\u00a0evident\u00a0when Pops Mensah-Bonsu,\u00a0joined ONE in Atlanta for a conversation just days before the World Cup\u00a0semi final\u00a0for a conversation on the power of sports across Africa. Mensah-Bonsu, a former NBA player and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/about\/creative-council\/\" id=\"165769\">ONE Diaspora Creative Council<\/a> member, spoke about <a href=\"https:\/\/seedacademyghana.org\/\">Seed Academy Ghana<\/a>, a non-profit organization he founded that combines basketball camps with off-court life skills, character growth, and community service. Basketball is not simply about developing elite athletes\u2014it&#8217;s\u00a0about building confidence, discipline, leadership, and opportunity that lasts long after the final whistle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"556\" height=\"817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167893 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/image.png 556w, https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/image-204x300.png 204w, https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/image-16x24.png 16w, https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/image-320x470.png 320w, https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/image-429x630.png 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-do-is-aim-to-democratize-that-access-and-level-that-playing-field-so-everybody-has-the-ability-to-thrive-and-to-live-nbsp-i-m-nbsp-taking-it-upon-myself-and-what-nbsp-we-re-nbsp-doing-in-africa-to-make-sure-that-the-situation-nbsp-we-re-nbsp-in-becomes-exactly-that-an-opportunity-nbsp-nbsp-pops-mensah-bonsu-nbsp\">&#8220;<em>What we do is aim to democratize that access and level that playing field so everybody has the ability to thrive and to live&#8230;&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;taking it upon myself, and what&nbsp;we\u2019re&nbsp;doing in Africa, to make sure that the situation&nbsp;we\u2019re&nbsp;in becomes exactly that, an opportunity.&nbsp;&#8221;&nbsp; &#8211; Pops Mensah-Bonsu<\/em>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-africa-nbsp-isn-t-nbsp-waiting-nbsp-it-s-nbsp-already-nbsp-building-nbsp\"><strong>Africa&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;waiting.&nbsp;It&#8217;s&nbsp;already&nbsp;building.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2026 FIFA World Cup gave millions of people the chance to see Africa through a different lens.&nbsp;For the first time, 10 African countries qualified meaning the continent accounted for a fifth of 2026 qualifiers.&nbsp;African teams and athletes&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;the talent, competitiveness, and excellence that have always existed\u2014they were simply performing on an even bigger stage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the group stage of the World Cup, ONE partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/jeremy-ebobisse\/\">Jeremy Ebobisse<\/a>, a striker for the Los Angeles Football Club for a <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/06\/26\/why-all-eyes-are-on-africa-at-the-world-cup\/\">TIME op-ed<\/a>\u00a0to drive\u00a0home\u00a0this point. His piece speaks, not only to the moment and success of African teams in the World Cup, but how that needs to be expanded into how we view African countries and makes the investment case for them. Seeing players like Flo Balogun represent the United States, alongside so many players of African heritage competing for countries around the world, sends an important message to young people everywhere: identity can connect cultures, and potential has no borders.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those stories are only part of a much larger picture. Across the continent, organizations like Seed Academy Ghana, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bal.nba.com\/\">Basketball Africa League<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bal.nba.com\/bal4her\">BAL4Her<\/a>, and initiatives that invest in coaches, girls, and young leaders are already building pathways for the next generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sports-reveal-what-nbsp-is-possible-nbsp\"><strong>Sports reveal what&nbsp;is possible.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back on&nbsp;a summer of sports across the country, what&nbsp;I&#8217;ll&nbsp;remember most&nbsp;wasn&#8217;t&nbsp;a final score or a highlight reel. It was that&nbsp;opportunity often begins in unexpected places\u2014a basketball court, a soccer pitch, a coach who believes in you, or an athlete willing to use their voice for something bigger than the&nbsp;game.&nbsp;Athletes&nbsp;have become some of today&#8217;s most trusted cultural voices.
