{"id":163035,"date":"2024-01-10T20:55:21","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T20:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/?p=163035"},"modified":"2025-06-02T14:26:36","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T14:26:36","slug":"congress-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/stories\/congress-new-year\/","title":{"rendered":"ONE thing Congress can do to fight HIV\/AIDS\u00a0in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New year, same fight to end extreme poverty and preventable disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the start of a busy year in Washington, DC but, as 2024 gets underway, Congress still has one thing left to do from last year \u2013 reauthorize <strong>PEPFAR, the President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure style=\"aspect-ratio: 500 \/ 281;\" class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio has-aspect-ratio is-ratio--landscape\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bono, Bush, and the end of AIDS: The Story of PEPFAR\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7G9Hr6lbNk8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PEPFAR has helped save 25 million lives from HIV\/AIDS since it was established in 2003, making it one of the most valuable tools we have in our fight to end this preventable disease for good. Its authorization expired in 2023 and \u2013 while the program can continue its work for now \u2013 Congress will need to officially ensure the program is renewed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ONE activists and staff braved rain and wind to deliver a sweet treat and a reminder to lawmakers that PEPFAR must be reauthorized in 2024!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/IMG_5546-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A card sent by ONE activists to Congress asking them to reauthorize PEPFAR.
