To celebrate, here\u2019s a set of graphics that showcase some of our favorite verses of poetry by strong women poets from around the world.&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-dr-maya-angelou-us\">1. Dr. Maya Angelou (US)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13968035162\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7149\/13968035162_6623415a02.jpg\" alt=\"photo 3\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A woman of many talents, <a href=\"http:\/\/mayaangelou.com\">Dr. Maya Angelou<\/a> is well known for her work as playwright and poet. She has been a trailblazer in the African American community and was deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Her poetry illuminates the human spirit and bridges the lines of race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-nuala-ni-dhomhnaill-ireland\">2. Nuala N\u00ed Dhomhnaill (Ireland)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a title=\"nualaquote by ONE.org, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13968035212\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5575\/13968035212_2eb53f551c.jpg\" alt=\"nualaquote\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><\/a><br><em>Photo credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liamblakephotographer.com\/index.php\/40-shades\/40-shades\/nuala-ni-dhomhnaill-339%20\">Liam Blake<\/a>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/bio\/nuala-ni-dhomhnaill\">Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill<\/a> is an Irish poet who has made a point to write only in Irish Gaelic. Her goal is to spark interest in and expand acceptance of Gaelic in the English speaking world. She\u2019s one of the few women working to preserve the language and considers her poetic language decision an expression of female empowerment. Naomi Shihab Nye (US)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13991197733\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7410\/13991197733_7506049b2c.jpg\" alt=\"naomi\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naomi Shihab Nye is the daughter of a Palestinian father and an American mother \u2014 a cultural background that informs much of her work. As one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/poet.php\/prmPID\/174%20\">biography states<\/a>, \u201cNye gives voice to her experience as an Arab-American through poems about heritage and peace that overflow with a humanitarian spirit.\u201d Beautifully said. Luci Tapahonso (Navajo Nation)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13968028491\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7002\/13968028491_8df0bab991.jpg\" alt=\"luci\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/voices.cla.umn.edu\/artistpages\/tapahonsoLuci.php%20\">Tapahonso<\/a> is the Navajo Nation\u2019s first Poet Laureate. She performs and writes her work in both English and her native tongue while maintaining the Navajo pattern of speech. <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.shanti.virginia.edu\/Lit_of_the_Southwest\/blue-horses-rush-in-by-luci-tapahonso\/13-this-is-how-they-were-placed-for-us-2\/%20\">Her reading of<\/a> \u201cThis is how they were placed for us,\u201d in both languages, gives the listener a sense of how her artistry weaves together \u201cold values and new ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-carol-ann-duffy-scotland\">5. Carol Ann Duffy (Scotland)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13971212355\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7134\/13971212355_5c934fdfe0.jpg\" alt=\"carolann\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/bio\/carol-ann-duffy%20\">Carol Ann Duffy<\/a> was the first woman, first Scot, and first openly gay person to serve as Britain\u2019s poet laureate. Listen to her read \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryinternationalweb.net\/pi\/site\/poem\/item\/23656\/auto\/DEMETER%20\">DEMETER<\/a>,\u201d the final poem of her collection The World\u2019s Wife; the collection retells myth and history from the viewpoints of the female figures and integrates experiences from the poet\u2019s own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-gcina-mhlophe-south-africa\">6. Her work focuses on keeping the art of storytelling alive. We love her poem \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreelibrary.com\/A+gesture+of+defiance%3A+selected+texts+by+Black+South+African+women...-a0110229012\">Praise to Our Mothers<\/a>\u201d; it honors the women, known and unknown, who have stood up for what they believe in to make a better South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-donna-obaseki-nigeria\">7. Donna Obaseki (Nigeria)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a title=\"DonnaK by ONE.org, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13968028391\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5261\/13968028391_37da62b5ab.jpg\" alt=\"DonnaK\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordup411ng.com\/donna-the-poet-i-never-memorize-my-poems\/%20\">Donna Obaseki <\/a>or Donna&nbsp;K, as she\u2019s also known, is a spoken word poet from Nigeria. She\u2019s been making a lot of noise in the spoken word scene and is well known for her passionate performances. You can see why when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yq7FPpcbbSc\">watch her perform<\/a> one her more popular poems \u201cWhat Do You Wear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-kate-tempest-uk\">8. Kate Tempest (UK)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a title=\"tempest by ONE.org, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13948111896\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7088\/13948111896_7fc79a239d.jpg\" alt=\"tempest\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><\/a><br><em>Photo credit: Katherine Leedale.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/16\/theater\/brand-new-ancients-stars-kate-tempest-in-a-tragic-tale.html?_r=0\">Kate Tempest<\/a> is a young, but already popular, English poet. She won the 2013 Ted Hughes Award for her work <em>Brand New Ancients<\/em>. Tempest is also a MC, and you can hear the influence of rap and hip-hop in her work. Her award-winning work borrows from the great myths and tragedies to uncover the extraordinary of ordinary lives. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/2012\/09\/11\/kate-tempest-poet-interview_n_1874317.html\">Watching her perform<\/a> gave us goosebumps!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-senna-peru\">9. Senna (Peru)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a title=\"SennaPeru by ONE.org, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13971212085\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2925\/13971212085_b565a725fb.jpg\" alt=\"SennaPeru\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><\/a><br><em>Photo credit: 10\u00d710 Educate Girls, Change the World.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senna is a young, aspiring poet from Peru, working to rise above the poverty plaguing her mining town. She was featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/girlrising.com\/about-the-film\/senna-in-peru\/%20\">the film Girl Rising<\/a> beside other amazing young women. Her impassioned performance at the recent Women in the World event left us here at ONE with tears in our eyes. Marquesha Babers (US)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a title=\"photo 1 by ONE.org, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theonecampaign\/13968028431\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7252\/13968028431_c34418eaea.jpg\" alt=\"photo 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><\/a><br><em>Photo credit: Women in the World.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marquesha Babers is from Watts, a rough neighborhood in Los Angeles, and grew up homeless for seven years of her childhood. Just like Senna, Marquesha uses poetry as a way to express herself in her harsh reality. In fact, Marquesha had a touching encounter with her inspiration, Senna, at a recent event! She has since graduated high school as a straight-A honors student and hopes to attend culinary school. You go girl!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-botlhale-boikanyo-south-africa\">11. She outperformed the competition with her incredible spoken word performances. We especially love the one about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b5xhWXzRFks%20\">Mandela<\/a>.
