The most shocking things in life aren\u2019t haunted houses or ghosts&nbsp;that go \u201cBOO!\u201d&nbsp;\u2013 it\u2019s&nbsp;what\u2019s happening right outside your window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked our policy team to share the most <strong>surprising, illuminating facts<\/strong> they\u2019ve come across in global development. Here\u2019s what they said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-more-people-have-access-to-a-mobile-phone-than-a-toilet\">1. More people have access to a mobile phone than a toilet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-every-year-developing-nbsp-countries-are-robbed-of-more-than-1-trillion-that-could-fight-poverty-disease-and-hunger\">2. Every year, developing&nbsp;countries are robbed of more than $1 trillion that could fight poverty, disease and hunger.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason? Corporate secrecy and phantom firms. <a href=\"https:\/\/one.org\/scandal\">More here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-more-than-one-third-nbsp-of-africa-lacks-clean-water\">3. More than one-third&nbsp;of Africa lacks clean water.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s nearly the population of the United States and Canada&nbsp;<em>combined<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-we-ve-boosted-the-number-of-people-who-have-access-to-life-saving-hiv-treatment-globally-by-4200-since-2002\">4. We\u2019ve boosted the number of people who have access to life-saving HIV-treatment globally by 4200% since 2002.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002, it was 300,000 people. Today, it\u2019s 12.9 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-africa-is-way-bigger-than-you-think\">5. Africa is <em>way<\/em> bigger than you think.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the map to prove it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-cowboys-stadium-uses-more-electricity-than-liberia\">6. Cowboys Stadium uses more electricity than Liberia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During moments of peak demand on game day, the 80,000-seat stadium may consume up to 10 megawatts of electricity. Liberia has the capacity to pump less than a third as much power into its national grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-less-than-1-percent-of-the-us-budget-goes-to-fighting-extreme-poverty\">7. Less than 1 percent of the US budget goes to fighting extreme poverty.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I know lots of you know that one, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R9kv_v95mrg\">it still surprises people.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-between-1-4-and-1-3-of-the-4-billion-metric-tons-of-food-produced-is-lost-or-wasted\">8. Individual US states&nbsp;are much richer than we think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Or\u2026 countries outside the US are much poorer than we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-here-s-what-google-autocomplete-says-about-sub-saharan-africa\">10. Here\u2019s what Google autocomplete says about sub-Saharan Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-diarrhea-and-pneumonia-together-kill-more-kids-than-aids-malaria-and-tb-nbsp-combined\">11. Diarrhea and pneumonia together kill more kids than AIDS, malaria and TB&nbsp;combined.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The sad part is that these are all preventable, treatable diseases that no one should have to die from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-12-1-2-billion-people-live-off-nbsp-1-25-a-day\">12. 1.2 billion people live off &nbsp;$1.25 a day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But the cool thing is that we can get this number to zero by 2030. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/shareworthy\/bono-at-ted\/\">Seriously.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-13-a-child-born-to-a-mother-who-can-read-is-50-more-likely-to-survive-past-the-age-of-5\">13. A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This stat is crazy and I can hardly believe it, but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-14-africa-uses-less-than-3-of-the-world-s-energy-despite-having-12-5-of-the-world-s-population\">14. Africa uses less than 3% of the world\u2019s energy, despite having 12.5% of the world\u2019s population.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States uses 19%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-15-of-all-the-26-countries-where-the-rate-of-extreme-poverty-is-over-40-only-2-are-not-in-sub-saharan-africa\">15. Of all the 26 countries where the rate of extreme poverty is over 40%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/publication\/global-monitoring-report\/report-card\/twin-goals\/ending-extreme-poverty-cont\">only 2 are NOT<\/a> in sub-Saharan Africa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-16-poor-people-in-developing-countries-spend-60-80-of-their-income-on-food\">16. Poor people in developing countries spend 60-80% of their income on food.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Americans spend less than 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-17-the-value-of-africa-s-exports-of-oil-gas-and-minerals-was-nearly-8x-the-value-of-international-aid-the-continent-received-in-2011\">17. The value of Africa\u2019s exports of oil, gas and minerals was nearly 8x the value of international aid the continent received in 2011.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Which begs the question\u2026 where is the money going?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-18-8-out-of-10-people-in-sub-saharan-africa-heat-their-home-and-cook-food-using-open-fires\">18. 8 out of 10 people in sub-Saharan Africa heat their home and cook food using open fires.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is really, really <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleancookstoves.org\/\">bad for your health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-19-75-of-the-world-s-food-is-generated-from-only-12-plants-and-5-animal-species\">19. 75% of the world\u2019s food is generated from only 12 plants and 5 animal species.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-20-165-million-people-suffer-from-childhood-malnutrition\">20. 165 million people suffer from childhood malnutrition.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If they joined hands, they could form a complete circle around the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-21-only-2-nbsp-african-countries-publish-sufficient-budget-information-for-citizens-to-know-what-their-governments-are-spending-money-on\">21. Only 2&nbsp;African countries publish sufficient budget information for citizens to know what their governments are spending money on.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hey, government: how much are we spending on public education? Oh, you have no idea? K thanks bye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-22-nbsp-if-unchecked-the-ebola-epidemic-is-expected-to-infect-1-4-million-people-by-january-2015\">22.&nbsp;If unchecked, the Ebola epidemic is expected to infect 1.4 million people by January 2015.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more than twice the number of people killed and wounded in the US Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-23-nbsp-road-crashes-kill-more-young-adults-aged-between-15-and-44-years-in-africa-than-malaria\">23.&nbsp;Road crashes kill more young adults (aged between 15 and 44 years) in Africa than malaria.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already, join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grsproadsafety.org\/\">Global Road Safety Partnership<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-24-nbsp-americans-spend-more-on-halloween-than-the-entire-world-spends-on-malaria-in-a-year\">24.&nbsp;Americans spend more on Halloween than the entire world spends on malaria in a year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now <em>this<\/em> fact is just straight up scary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-25-nbsp-3-million-children-die-from-malnutrition-every-year\">25.&nbsp;3 million children die from malnutrition every year.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine if <em>every child<\/em> between the ages of 0 and 4 in the states of Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, New York, Connecticut, Delaware and D.C. died in 2013.
