Americans&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thesalt\/2014\/02\/27\/283071610\/u-s-lets-141-trillion-calories-of-food-go-to-waste-each-year\">waste<\/a>&nbsp;about 141 trillion calories worth of food every day.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That adds up to about $165 billion per year \u2014 4 times the amount of food Africa&nbsp;<em>imports<\/em>&nbsp;each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-more-than-9-out-of-10-farms-in-the-world-are-family-farms\">6. By 2030, only 1&nbsp;in 7&nbsp;people are expected to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmingfirst.org\/Post2015-People#Slide5\">consuming<\/a> less than 2,500 calories per day.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is great news \u2014 it means more people in developing countries are eating more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-grains-make-up-45-of-the-world-s-diet\">10. Grains make up 45% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/what-the-world-eats\/\">world\u2019s diet<\/a>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.one.org\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/grains.png\" alt=\"grains\" class=\"wp-image-94326\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-11-insects-are-among-the-most-efficient-forms-of-food-available\">11. Agriculture provides jobs for around 40% of the world\u2019s population.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/sustainablefuture\/food.asp\">agriculture<\/a> is the single largest employer in the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-13-africa-s-total-area-is-more-than-three-times-that-of-the-us-yet-the-area-of-irrigated-land-in-africa-is-only-26-6-more-than-that-of-the-us\">13. Africa\u2019s total area is more than three times that of the US.
