Washington,\u00a0 D.C.<\/strong>-ONE today thanked\u00a0 the U.S. Senate for restoring funding to save lives, fight disease and increase\u00a0 economic and educational opportunities for the world’s poorest people.<\/p>\n

The Senate today\u00a0 voted in favor of an amendment to the FY2010 Budget Resolution, introduced by\u00a0 Sens. John Kerry (D-MA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN).\u00a0 The Kerry-Lugar amendment\u00a0 restored the funding level requested by President Obama for the international\u00a0 affairs budget, the portion of the budget that includes America’s global poverty\u00a0 and disease reduction initiatives.<\/p>\n

After the vote on the\u00a0 Senate floor, David Lane, President and C.E.O. of ONE, made the following\u00a0 statement:<\/p>\n

“ONE thanks the\u00a0 Senate for passing the Kerry-Lugar amendment and extends our great appreciation to Senators Kerry and Lugar for\u00a0 their leadership and to President Obama for his budget request.\u00a0 Today, the\u00a0 Senate made a smart decision to support effective, affordable programs rather\u00a0 than shortsightedly cut support for people living in extreme poverty during this\u00a0 global economic downturn. Helping improve the lives of people who face disease,\u00a0 hunger and economic stagnation around the world is truly smart power that\u00a0 increases economic opportunity, improves America’s global standing and\u00a0 strengthens our security.”<\/p>\n

Last week, the Senate\u00a0 Budget Committee, chaired by Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND), removed approximately $4\u00a0 billion from the President’s $53.8 billion international affairs budget request.\u00a0 These cuts could have jeopardized innovative, successful programs that increase\u00a0 access to clean water, support\u00a0 infrastructure and increase access to basic lifesaving medicines and treatments\u00a0 for HIV\/AIDS, malaria and early childhood diseases. These\u00a0 proposed cuts come at a time when the world’s poorest people are being hit hard\u00a0 from the economic crisis in the form of falling investment, exports and\u00a0 remittances.<\/p>\n

Thousands of calls\u00a0 from ONE members flooded the Senate over the last couple days and nearly 10,000\u00a0 ONE members received text messages today, asking them to call their Senator in\u00a0 support of the Kerry-Lugar amendment. Both\u00a0 Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have\u00a0 also urged the Senate to restore funding to the international affairs budget,\u00a0 arguing its importance to U.S. security and other interests\u00a0 (“Army Times: Gates Lobbies For More Funds – For\u00a0 State<\/a>,” 3\/30\/09).<\/em><\/p>\n

Thanks\u00a0 to bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress, America’s lifesaving global efforts\u00a0 have delivered historic results in the last several\u00a0 years. More than 2 million\u00a0 people with HIV\/AIDS in Africa are receiving basic medicines and beating the\u00a0 disease thanks to America’s commitment. That number is up from just 50,000 in\u00a0 2003. Millions more are surviving malaria because of cost-effective investments\u00a0 in simple bed nets and medicines. Some 34 million more children living in the\u00a0 world’s poorest regions have been given the chance to go to school for the first\u00a0 time in recent years, opening the door to productive\u00a0 futures.<\/p>\n
