Bono, co-founder of ONE, met with President Calderon today to ask him to make the fight against poverty central to the 2012 Mexican G20 agenda.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the meeting, Bono said:<\/p>\n
“Next year Mexico will chair the G20, the annual get together of the most powerful leaders on the planet. Obama, Hu Jintao, Sarkozy, Merkel, Zuma, Dilma, they’ll all be flying in.\u00a0 By the time they fly out, we want them to have agreed specific decisions which we know will save and transform lives in the poorest parts of the world.\u00a0 As the host, President Calderon will set the agenda.\u00a0 I asked him to persuade the G20 to take bold action on the fight against corruption globally, on improving healthcare, and on boosting agriculture around the world.”<\/p>\n
ONE’s Central and South America Director Oliver Buston said:<\/p>\n
“2012 is an opportunity for the Mexican people to lead the world.\u00a0 Mexicans are the most important people on the planet in 2012.\u00a0 Please join the ONE campaign to help put pressure on political leaders all over the globe. Next year when the world comes to Mexico, we’re asking Mexico to change the world. It’s a big ask, I know, but my experience of this country is that people stand up for what they believe in and can’t\u00a0 stand things they don’t – such as children dying for lack of basic medications, or for lack of food, or from corruption which is perhaps the biggest killer of all.”<\/p>\n
