Tampa, FL, August 29, 2012<\/strong>\u00a0– The\u00a0International Republican Institute<\/a>, the\u00a0U.S. Global Leadership Coalition<\/a>, and\u00a0ONE<\/a>\u00a0hosted a panel discussion during the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida to highlight U.S. leadership in international development.\u00a0 The premier foreign policy event at the Convention,\u00a0The U.S. Role in International Development\u2014Legacy and Future<\/em>, featured two panels of prominent policymakers and opinion leaders who discussed the foreign policy legacy of past Republican administrations and addressed the future of US foreign policy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to continue to believe as a nation that every life is worthy . . .\u00a0 as we want to see not just a more economically healthy world, but also a more democratic one,\u201d said Former Secretary of State, ONE Board Member and USGLC Advisory Council member\u00a0Condoleezza Rice<\/strong>, who was joined onstage by\u00a0Josh Bolten<\/strong>, former White House Chief of Staff and also a member of ONE\u2019s Board of Directors.<\/p>\n

The panel also included\u00a0Michael Gerson<\/strong>, ONE Senior Fellow and former Chief Presidential Speechwriter; The Honorable\u00a0Kay Granger<\/strong>\u00a0(TX), U.S. House of Representatives and a member of IRI\u2019s Board of Directors; andConstance Berry Newman<\/strong>, former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, former U. S. Agency for International Development Assistant Administrator for Africa, and a member of IRI\u2019s Board of Directors.<\/p>\n

Kay Granger<\/strong>\u00a0explained that it is \u201cour job to educate people that foreign assistance is less than 1% of the federal budget and use that money effectively so that it\u2019s sustainable,\u201d even during difficult economic times.<\/p>\n

The second panel looked at the future of international development policy and was moderated by\u00a0KT McFarland<\/strong>, National Security Analyst with FOX News and included\u00a0Senator Kelly Ayotte<\/strong>\u00a0(NH); AmbassadorRichard S. Williamson<\/strong>, Foreign Policy Advisor on the Romney for President campaign and a member of IRI\u2019s Board of Directors;\u00a0Mitchell Reiss<\/strong>, Foreign Policy Advisor on the Romney for President campaign; and Ambassador\u00a0Paula Dobriansky<\/strong>, Foreign Policy Advisor on the Romney for President campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe things President Bush did in Africa not only reflected our values, but created stronger relationships there,\u201d said\u00a0Senator Kelly Ayotte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
