WASHINGTON \u2013 The ONE Campaign released the following statement on reports that the US State Department has terminated over two-thirds of US foreign assistance contracts, grants, and agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe share the administration\u2019s goal of making America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. But we cannot accomplish these goals by cutting programs that save lives, prevent conflict from spreading, expand US jobs and economic opportunities, and protect Americans against global pandemics,\u201d said Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Director for North America at ONE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt is deeply concerning to see the termination of so many activities, including many that the administration previously had identified as emergency life-saving assistance. A truncated review of these programs, without a full accounting of their impact, and the sudden cancellation of over two-thirds of US foreign assistance will put lives in danger and lead to extended legal battles, driving up costs for American taxpayers. Instead, the administration should preserve programs that have proven effective and critical, such as PEPFAR, food and shelter for those in conflict zones and support for civil society, while ensuring a pathway to sustainability and local ownership. When Congress considers a funding bill for the remainder of the fiscal year in early March, they should make clear their intent to sustain this critical work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAs we build a better future for these programs, ONE will support long-term solutions, including bipartisan congressional reform efforts to make US foreign assistance programs more innovative and effective in dedicating critical resources to lifesaving programs.
