Despite immense need, foreign aid, or official development assistance (ODA), is not growing to address the interconnected global crises. Instead, the development piece of these countries\u2019 ODA pie is being cut smaller and smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse yet, analysis also finds growing debt service payments are rapidly outpacing <a href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/net-finance-flows-to-developing-countries\/\">aid and investments<\/a> in all developing countries. Developing country debt levels have more than doubled since 2009, and the cost of servicing that debt has skyrocketed. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure style=\"aspect-ratio: 500 \/ 282;\" class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-wp-embed is-provider-one-data-amp-analysis wp-block-embed-one-data-amp-analysis has-aspect-ratio is-ratio--landscape\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Q6dTgSuzzn\"><a href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/g7-aid-to-africa\/\">G7 Aid to Africa<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;G7 Aid to Africa&#8221; &#8212; ONE Data &amp; Analysis\" src=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/g7-aid-to-africa\/embed\/#?secret=mOo5ndp6XW#?secret=Q6dTgSuzzn\" data-secret=\"Q6dTgSuzzn\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other key figures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>G7 and the EU Institutions&#8217; share of aid to Africa is at a near-50 year low of <a href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/story\/2421566\/\">25.8 percent<\/a> in 2022 (the most recent, complete data available).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecfr.eu\/article\/false-economy-why-europeans-should-stop-slashing-development-aid-to-africa\/\">EU, France, Germany<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/press\/one-statement-on-fy2024-foreign-assistance-funding-bill\/\">US<\/a> have announced aid cuts totaling nearly US $9 billion. Overall, aid donors spend nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/net-finance-flows-to-developing-countries\">one in five<\/a> of their aid dollars at home. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Net financial flows to African countries dropped by <a href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/net-finance-flows-to-developing-countries\">18 percent<\/a> from 2020-2022, from US $56 billion to US $40 billion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>African countries are projected to spend $81 billion on <a href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/net-finance-flows-to-developing-countries\/#fn2\">debt service<\/a> between 2023-2025, with one-fifth of those payments going to China.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than <a href=\"https:\/\/data.one.org\/data-dives\/net-finance-flows-to-developing-countries\">one in five<\/a> emerging markets and developing countries paid more to service their debt in 2022 than they received in external financing. This could rise to more than one in three by 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe G7 and EU say they are prioritizing stronger partnerships with Africa, but ONE&#8217;s research shows that their words don\u2019t match their actions.\u201d <strong>said Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli, President and CEO of The ONE Campaign. <\/strong>&#8220;The need for increased investments that drive economic growth and healthy lives in Africa has never been more important, but many partner countries are looking inward instead of forward. G7 and EU leadership must take decisive action to unlock more low-interest financing and speed up debt relief.
