On top of conflict, aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of climate change, debt and economic challenges make it harder for governments in low-income countries to respond to the crisis and take measures to protect their populations from hunger.<\/p>\n<p>As ONE lays out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/africa\/issues\/covid-19-tracker\/explore-food-security\/#0\">Food Security Data Dive<\/a>, the impacts of the food crises are already being felt around the world:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One in ten people currently do not have enough to eat.<\/li>\n<li>In 2021, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/publications\/global-report-food-crises-2022\">193 million people<\/a> in urgent need of food assistance. If this population were a country, it would be the 8th largest in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Since Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine began, an additional 55.2 million people are experiencing hunger.<\/li>\n<li>Gender inequalities are widening. Before the pandemic, women were 6% more likely than men to experience hunger. During the height of the pandemic, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/gbvaor.net\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/GBV%20AoR%20HD%20-%20Food%20Insecurity%2C%20Famine%20and%20GBV%20-19112021.pdf\">10%<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Credible estimates put the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0306919221001299#:~:text=Ending%20hunger%20by%202030%20is,agriculture%2C%20food%20and%20rural%20development.\">global cost of ending hunger between $39 billion and $50 billion a year,<\/a> less than half the $110 billion spent on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/industry-reports\/pet-food-market-100554\">pet food<\/a> last year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Edwin Ikhuoria, Executive Director for Africa, ONE<\/strong> said: <em>\u201cThese countries are experiencing acute hardship as the cost of living crisis, driven by soaring food and fuel prices, puts huge pressure on people already struggling to get by.
