In 2018, 770,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses. In Congress, Representative\u00a0McCaul\u00a0has been a leader in championing effective and efficient global AIDS programs, like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, that have helped save millions of lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAIDS isn\u2019t a disease of the past, it\u2019s a crisis of now,\u201d\u00a0<strong>said<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Tom Hart, North America executive director of ONE.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cIn Congress, Representative\u00a0McCaul\u00a0has been a leader in the fight against the disease, working to foster bipartisan support for proven global health programs that will help end the scourge of AIDS in our lifetime. ONE, and the millions of people around the world who benefit from these life-saving initiatives, are fortunate to have Representative\u00a0McCaul\u2019s leadership in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABOUT THE GLOBAL AIDS FIGHT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On October 10th, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, one of the most effective global health partnerships on the planet, held its 2019 replenishment in Lyon, France. The organization announced $14 billion in commitments from donors around the world to fight AIDS, TB and malaria.<\/p>\n<p>At the State of the Union, President Trump pledged to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w4FyVGtMa4s&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=3246__;!SxXtNzbPoJo!292TSNWRuiB8sa7uyEoW5uiSOB-xksJQUoulJ318xgF2_QqpqKTVuUmTAfZeJfH6CME$\">defeat AIDS in America and beyond.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0However, just weeks later, he proposed a budget that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.theglobalfight.org\/with-budget-president-seeks-retreat-in-us-global-health-leadership\/__;!SxXtNzbPoJo!292TSNWRuiB8sa7uyEoW5uiSOB-xksJQUoulJ318xgF2_QqpqKTVuUmTAfZet2gS86U$\">slashed\u00a0<\/a>America\u2019s global AIDS programs, including the Global Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the House of Representatives passed a spending\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/appropriations.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.appropriations.house.gov\/files\/FY2020*20SFOPs*20Sub*20Markup*20Draft.pdf__;JSUlJQ!SxXtNzbPoJo!292TSNWRuiB8sa7uyEoW5uiSOB-xksJQUoulJ318xgF2_QqpqKTVuUmTAfZeGXUOFfE$\">bill<\/a>\u00a0that included $1.56 billion for the Global Fund. Representative\u00a0McCaul, along with Representative Eliot L. Engel (NY), helped build support for the Global Fund in advance of the replenishment by introducing a critical bipartisan resolution,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/foreignaffairs.house.gov\/2019\/7\/engel-mccaul-introduce-legislation-reaffirming-commitment-to-fight-aids-tb-and-malaria__;!SxXtNzbPoJo!292TSNWRuiB8sa7uyEoW5uiSOB-xksJQUoulJ318xgF2_QqpqKTVuUmTAfZerxs0oMo$\">H.Res.517<\/a>. Then, in September, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed a foreign assistance spending\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.appropriations.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/FY2020*20SFOPS*20Appropriations*20Act,*20Report.pdf__;JSUlJQ!SxXtNzbPoJo!292TSNWRuiB8sa7uyEoW5uiSOB-xksJQUoulJ318xgF2_QqpqKTVuUmTAfZeQ0OcNAk$\">bill<\/a>\u00a0that included $1.56 billion for the Global Fund. In October, bipartisan lawmakers in Congress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.one.org\/us\/press\/globalfund\/__;!SxXtNzbPoJo!292TSNWRuiB8sa7uyEoW5uiSOB-xksJQUoulJ318xgF2_QqpqKTVuUmTAfZewaT7-mk$\">signaled<\/a>\u00a0a commitment of $1.56 billion to the Global Fund for three years, maintaining the United States\u2019 historic one-third commitment. Together, with funding from other international donors and the private sector, the Global Fund will help save 16 million lives by 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AIDS STATISTICS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Globally, 770,000 people died from AIDS-related causes in 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, 1.7 million contracted HIV in 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, more than 23 million people are receiving antiretroviral treatment. This is 62% of people in need.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, roughly 850 young women [15-24] will contract HIV today.
