WASHINGTON — Following today\u2019s public health emergency declaration by the World Health Organization, Gayle Smith, president and CEO of The ONE Campaign and a former administrator of USAID, issued the below statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s emergency\u00a0declaration is\u00a0a needed step in a long race against an ugly disease that knows no borders. In order to get ahead of the Ebola virus, the international community must be fully invested with more resources and more urgency. The time to start caring about Ebola isn\u2019t when it reaches the shores of the United States or Europe, it\u2019s right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2014, Gayle Smith sat on the National Security Council and helped lead the United States\u2019 Ebola response.
