Testifying today before the House Appropriations Committee on President Trump\u2019s FY20 budget request, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pjkHhTIUmUA&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=3120\">\u201cwe\u2019re going to succeed\u201d<\/a> in the fight against AIDS. While\u00a0<strong>Secretary Pompeo\u2019s rhetoric is consistent with President Trump\u2019s pledge to<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w4FyVGtMa4s&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=3246\"><strong>\u201cdefeat AIDS in America and beyond,\u201d<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>it is inconsistent with the reality of this Administration\u2019s own budget which contains massive cuts to global AIDS programs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty simple. We can\u2019t \u201csucceed\u201d and end the AIDS crisis by cutting programs proven to fight the disease. President Trump\u2019s budget would slash funding for global AIDS programs, including PEPFAR and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The President\u2019s FY20 budget includes 30% less than what is needed to continue America\u2019s historic support for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.<\/strong>\u00a0The budget requests $1.1 billion for FY20, falling far short of the $1.56 billion needed to ensure the Global Fund meets its replenishment targets.
