ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Policy and Advocacy Manager will lead ONE’s policy and advocacy work in the UK and will be responsible for providing policy analysis and leadership on a number of our key policy issues, including development financing, global health, the reform of the international financial architecture and the need to increase African agency in global decision making processes. S/he will work closely with ONE policy and advocacy colleagues across Europe, as well as with ONE’s Strategy and Policy team.
S/he will be responsible for overseeing ONE’s parliamentary monitoring, identifying key parliamentary targets and building effective relationships with them to advance ONE’s objectives within the UK.
The ideal candidate will be a great team player and self-starter with excellent project management and communications skills, able to handle a varied role, and with a range of experience within development policy. Demonstrable knowledge of UK and African development issues is essential. Demonstrable knowledge of development issues in Africa and the international development landscape in the UK is essential. The Policy and Advocacy Manager will report to the UK Director and work from our London office.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL
- Identify ONE’s core parliamentary targets, develop strategies for effectively engaging them and lead on building and maintaining relationships
- Lead on policy & advocacy work for UK campaigns, including managing relationships with relevant external lobby and campaigning groups, preparing documents on specific development issues for a range of stakeholders, lobbying targets and audiences and crafting articles for blog posts, briefing documents and talking points
- Working closely with the UK Director, the Europe Executive Director and other relevant staff across the organisation, identify trends and issues within the development sector and develop strategies, projects and interventions around these as appropriate
- Provide policy and political analysis on UK development policy issues, and provide UK perspectives to ONE’s organization-wide policy discussions, ensuring organizational positions are compatible with the UK
- Ensure access for ONE at relevant high-level meetings, represent ONE at these meetings as required, and/or ensure that other ONE representatives are properly briefed
- Lead the conceptualisation and organisation of events as required to advance ONE’s UK policy and advocacy objectives
- Any other duties as required by the role
WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE
- Strong background in development, economics, international relations or a related field
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred; 6+ years’ relevant professional experience.
- Significant experience of working on development policy in an NGO, think tank, legislature or government
- Strong political judgement and understanding of the UK political environment and relevant parliamentary and policy processes
- A demonstrable understanding of the links between advocacy, policy-making, legislation, and implementation of programs
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to synthesise complex policy documents and translate these for a wider audience
- Superb professionalism and diplomacy; ability to interact with high-level individuals internally and externally
- Entrepreneurial spirit
- Quick turnaround research skills-must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audience
- Ability to work in an agile, fast-paced environment, with shifting priorities
- Ability to work as part of a cross-country team
- Previous work experience in Africa or African issues desirable

TRAVEL:
Travel up to 10%.
