Eclipsed, a dramatic look at the status of women during the Liberian civil war, made history in 2016 as the first Broadway play written by, directed by, and starring black women. The play earned one Tony Award for Best Costume Design and six total Tony Award nominations, including a nomination for Best Play for playwright and ONE advocate Danai Gurira.

Beyond the headlines, Gurira and her cast and crew engaged audiences in the plight of girls and women throughout the world, drawing into sharp relief what we mean when we say “Poverty is Sexist.”

In April, ONE’s co-founder Bono kicked off a dedication series at performances, memorializing the evening to the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram. Connie Britton, Gloria Steinem, Jill Scott, Nancy Pelosi, Nicholas Kristof, and many others led the dedications by inviting audiences to say aloud the names of the kidnapped girls to honor them, and to draw attention to the global effort to Bring Back Our Girls.

Gurira and Eclipsed director Liesl Tommy joined ONE for a Facebook Live event to talk more about the importance of highlighting the tragedy women faced during the war in Liberia, and the continued advocacy required to protect girls and women everywhere. Click here to watch their discussion.

Eclipsed ends its Broadway run on June 19, 2016, but the discussion and activism won’t stop there.

Add your name to a letter from Gurira and others to call on world leaders to help end extreme poverty by working to end global gender inequality.
