Today in human goodness: meet the ONE Campus leader from University of Iowa

UIowa

It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week and because any time is a good time to say thanks to volunteers: THANK YOU for being the best volunteers ever. Seriously you guys rock. Not sure if you’ve heard, but ONE has a college program which mobilizes college students on their campuses in the fight against extreme poverty.

They write thousands of letters, make hundreds of phone calls, have tons of meetings with Members of Congress and their staff to urge them to support programs that are saving lives and creating sustainable futures in the developing world every day—basically they’re awesome poverty fighting machines.

We’d love to highlight all of our ONE Campus chapters, but we have 142 of them… and it would take about a year to write about all the amazing things they are doing all across the nation. With that said we want to highlight one of our top chapters: the University of Iowa. We asked University of Iowa Campus Leader, Ashley Horne, a few questions and some of her answers left us speechless! Get to know this awe-inspiring campus leader and volunteer who is definitely going places.

Ashley

Name: Ashley Horne

Age: 22

Major: Anthropology and Health Science, Global Health Certificate

Cool fact: During a summer internship in Ghana, my host family had a daughter while I was there and named her after me.

How she got involved with ONE/ONE Campus: I signed up at the student organization fair on my campus, then got involved during the first year ONE was at the University of Iowa.

What her experience with ONE Campus has been like: Being a part of ONE Campus has been an incredible experience! Prior to joining ONE, I avoided politics as much as possible. However, after seeing firsthand how advocacy actions on our campus can translate to legislative change, I have become a much more engaged and politically active citizen. ONE has equipped me and my peers in the ONE Campus community with the tools to create real, lasting change through effective advocacy. Attending the ONE Power Summit for two years, as well as being on the Student Advisory Board, has allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people from all over the country (and the world), who I have made lasting connections with.

Tell us your best ONE Campus story: Two years ago, our chapter hosted the Princess of Zambia as part of ONE at Iowa’s IC Red Week.

Plans after graduation: I’ll be starting a MSPH (Masters of Science in Public Health) Program in Global Epidemiology at Emory University in the fall!
