Barbra Barrar wrote this blog for us. As a Congressional District Leader, she is a dedicated ONE volunteer and we were delighted to have her with us for the NYC shows.
To close out the North American leg of their iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour 2015, U2 took up residence at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden for eight incredible sold out shows and of course ONE volunteers were right there with them!
Volunteers had a blast talking to fans each night and having them sign ONE’s Poverty Is Sexist petition asking world leaders to commit to ending extreme poverty by working to unlock the full potential of millions of girls and women. No matter how you cut it – socially, economically, legally – girls and women in the poorest countries are disproportionately affected by poverty. We can and must change that!
There were fantastic performances by U2 and special guests like Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Paul Simon, and Jimmy Fallon & The Roots, but the most important people there were YOU; all those people using their voices for justice and equality in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable, treatable diseases. In Bono’s words: “the Ass Kickers”!
Acknowledging ONE volunteers, Bono said, “Ass kickers themselves, the ONE Campaign, are in the house tonight. Thank you! 7 million members…ass kickers!”
After the final night in New York, we had gathered nearly 8,000 petition signers for the New York City shows alone and well over 35,000 signers for the entire tour! Ass kickers indeed! #ONEonTour #U2ieTour
