To honor the life and career of ONE’s former CEO, Michael Elliott’s family, ONE, and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) have created the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling.
Michael, who died earlier this year, had a distinguished career in the media before working at ONE. He served as editor of both TIME International and Newsweek International, a board member of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), and as Political Editor and Washington Bureau Chief of The Economist. Michael was passionate about using storytelling to unravel complex issues and shine a light on global development issues—and the people at their center.
The award will honor an emerging journalist in Africa who strives to strengthen people’s voices and improve their well-being. The ICFJ will issue a call for nominations, vet applications, and select a winner via a distinguished jury. Not only will the winner be able to spend time in U.S. newsrooms to learn new skills, he or she will receive mentorship from the ICFJ.
We are very excited about this new award, and feel it truly commemorates Michael Elliott’s vision of quality journalism as a powerful tool for engagement and empowerment.
