It’s no secret that ONE members get things done. Whenever the call goes out, you stand up and deliver. In 2016, ONE and its energetic members pushed Congress to enact the Global Food Security Act (GFSA), which was designed to provide farmers in developing countries with the support and resources they needed. ONE members made 2,883 calls, wrote 15,867 letters, and conducted in-person meetings to turn this bill into reality.
GFSA provides the tools needed to end global hunger and malnutrition in our lifetime. The results speak for themselves — a 19% drop in poverty and a 26% reduction of stunting in targeted program areas. In those areas, 9 million more people are living above the poverty line, 1.7 million fewer households are facing hunger, and 1.8 million more children are free from stunting.
Now, we’re calling on you once again to step up and support the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act and make sure Congress extends this program before it expires later this year.
ONE strongly supports S. 2269, the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act. This bill will ensure that critical food security programs continue for another five years. The United States has the opportunity to build on the successes that have made GFSA-funded programs effective, efficient, and accountable to U.S. taxpayers.
Recently, the Senate passed its version of the GFSA reauthorization bill thanks to the hard work of its cosponsors — Senator Johnny Isakson from Georgia and Senator Bob Casey from Pennsylvania.
The bill will now go to the House of Representatives. Under the continuing strong leadership of Representatives Chris Smith and Betty McCollum, we’re hoping that the House will quickly approve this life-saving legislation, but we need your help to make sure that happens! Contact your member of Congress and ask them to support the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act.
Special thanks to House Sponsors @RepChrisSmith and Rep. @BettyMcCollum04 for their contributions to this important piece of legislation! Food security is more important than ever #no1Hungry https://t.co/Ck5eYOVJad
