Fact of the day: We are at a critical moment in the fight against HIV/AIDS

This is the last in a series of facts that we will be sharing with you to get you up to speed on what’s at stake in 2015.

tipping point

We are at a critical moment in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We have made incredible success in the fight against the disease over the past two decades. Since 2001, the rate of new HIV infections has decreased by more than 50% in 25 countries around the world, more than half of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2013, for the first time ever, more people were added to AIDS treatment than were newly infected with HIV.

Now, for the first time in history, the world can look ahead to the beginning of the end of the AIDS pandemic. However the fight is not over. In 2013 alone, AIDS killed 1.5 million people, 1.1 million of whom were living in sub-Saharan Africa. Though life-saving antiretroviral treatment is available, millions of people cannot access it: 60% of people who are HIV-positive are not on treatment. In 2015 donors, African governments, international organizations and the private sector must come together and step up their efforts to ensure the beginning of the end of AIDS become a reality.
