The ONE Campaign is deeply saddened by the passing of Botswana’s second President, Sir Ketumile Masire. Under his leadership, Botswana became a shining example of how sound policies and transparent institutional practices can yield economic progress and good governance. He was an outstanding independence movement leader who provided economic leadership for his country by facilitating and protecting the country’s steady financial growth and towering economic development.

President Masire was a champion of good governance at home and abroad, introducing Botswana’s two-term limit on ruling presidents and the automatic succession by the vice president on the retirement of the sitting head of state. He contributed to the fall of apartheid and led numerous diplomatic initiatives in Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Ghana, and Swaziland. He also contributed to investigations on the Rwandan genocide and helped broker ceasefire agreements in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He dedicated his post-presidency to the same ideals that shaped his presidency.
