The 2014 ONE Power Summit is in the books, and we couldn’t have finished on a better note. ONE’s top volunteer leaders stormed Capitol Hill Tuesday for 230 meetings with members of Congress!
After days filled with awesome training, in-depth policy sessions & great speakers, not to mention a surprise visit by our co-founder, these incredible ONE activists were armed with all the tools they needed to be advocates in support of life-saving development programs in their Congressional meetings.
Our day on the Hill couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, as the House of Representatives moved to do a mark-up of H.R. 2548, The Electrify Africa Act earlier today (in case you’re wondering: the House Committee on Foreign Affairs sent the bill to the House floor for a vote!). But these volunteer leaders weren’t in it alone.
More than 437 calls and 3,186 tweets to Representatives came pouring in from ONE members around the country, asking them to co-sponsor the bill which will provide first-time access to 50 million people in sub-Saharan Africa by 2020 if passed.
A great day of lobbying was capped off with a reception in the Capitol building, where Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA 39) who authored the bill thanked our leaders for their efforts in support of this important legislation. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA 12), Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY 17), Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD 8) also stopped by to thank our volunteers for their efforts throughout the year and to highlight how important their grassroots advocacy is to our cause.
I’ve been attending the ONE Power Summit for the past six years, first as a volunteer and now as a staff member, and I can honestly say that our Hill Day is my absolute favorite day of the year. Walking the corridors of Congress through a sea of ONE members rocking their T-shirts and being bad-ass advocates in the fight against extreme poverty is an incredible experience, and I’m already counting down the days to next year’s summit.
