This week, ONE UK launched a fake website, http://stash-the-cash.com, to show the world how easy – and legal – it is for corrupt dealers to launder their dirty money. It’s a part of ONE UK’s campaign calling on Prime Minister David Cameron to shut down UK phantom firms – fake companies used to hide illegal cash – which he did in a historic announcement yesterday.
The site, based on real-life money-laundering websites, does not include any information about ONE until a person clicks on any image on the site. “Fortunately, this site isn’t real,” says the message in the pop-up. “But it could be. Setting up an anonymous company, or phantom firm, is easy to do and completely legal.”
