This Sunday, Germans will vote for a new government. At this point in time it is impossible to know who will win.
What we do know is that whoever does win needs to renew the German leadership in the fight against extreme poverty – not only because Germany has promised to invest more in this mission, but also because Germany will hold the G8 presidency in 2015. And with the Millennium Development Goals expiring that year, Germany better do its development homework.
So back in April, ONE Germany launched it’s Ich Schaue Hin campaign. Since then we’ve had support from ONE co-founder Bono, actress Anna Loos, singer Herbert Grönemeyer, Melinda Gates, artist Olafur Eliasson, singer Ivy Quainoo, TV chef Tim Mälzer, presenter Minh-Khai Phan-Thi and singer Rea Garvey. Phew!
But the driving force behind the campaign has been our ONE members, particularly our fifty Youth Ambassadors. They signed petitions, donated pictures of their eyes, volunteered at events, and asked their candidates the go on record in support of ONE’s key asks prior to the election. An incredible 1,000 election candidates agreed.
It doesn’t stop there. They have convinced local media to cover the campaign, organised concerts, sports events and presentations. They even paid Chancellor Merkel a visit to let her know in person that they are closely watching the different candidates’ positions on aid.
And finally we went on the road with the ONE Election Tour – the first ever in Germany! We literally followed the top candidates of the five main parties all over the country with our spoof political party posters and our stylish (some say freaky, but what do they know!?) glasses to remind them they are being watched.
Our hope now is that whoever actually makes it into parliament on Sunday does not forget their commitment. Together with our members, we will continue to remind them of their and Germany’s promise in the fight against extreme poverty.
Help us say a big thank you to all our ONE members in Germany who campaigned tirelessly with us – leave a comment below and we’ll pass them on!
