ONE is hitting the campaign trail to find out where candidates in New Hampshire, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Florida stand on extreme poverty. Stay tuned for more updates like these from our field team and organizers on the road.
On Monday night, I went to the VFW in Nashua, New Hampshire, with ONE members Brandon Laws and Tom Leary to speak with Senate candidate Paul Hodes and Senator John Kerry, who were serving up chili to supporters at an event hosted by the Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire.
As soon as we entered, Rep. Hodes and Sen. Kerry noticed our ONE shirts, and we made our way to the front of the event. We are always proud and excited to represent ONE and the world’s poorest people, and this time, we sat in the first row and had to watch our toes to make sure they weren’t stomped on by the excited elected officials!
After Senator Kerry was finished serving chili we had a chance to catch up with him for a moment. Watch our interaction with him in the video above.
We thanked him for his support of programs like the Global Fund and PEPFAR, which are now working to save millions of lives from AIDS, malaria and TB in Africa. We also thanked Sen. Kerry, who has also worked hard on U.S. Aid Reform, an effort to encourage transparency and accountability so that U.S. dollars end up where they are supposed to go.
And when we offered him a ONE band, he said that in one of his many conversations with Bono, he had already received one. He thanked us for the work we are doing on behalf of those without a voice and complimented ONE, too. We thanked him for being a hero to the world’s poorest people.
We only have a few weeks left, and we need your voice to make sure that our elected officials know that continued American leadership can help save millions of lives in the developing world and create a safer and more secure world for all.
