The UK Director is ONE’s spokesperson in the UK and will lead ONE’s advocacy, policy, media and campaigning work in the UK. They will also be responsible for maintaining and growing partnerships and supporting fundraising efforts. They will build and maintain high-level relationships both at political and official levels within Government, as well as within the wider UK community in support of ONE’s objectives. They will lead the UK team and line manage senior team members. The post-holder will be a member of the ONE Europe Leadership Team and will also contribute to organisational leadership globally. 

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of the international development agenda, experience of lobbying the UK government on ONE’s issues and a demonstrable understanding of how creative campaigning, advocacy and media combine to deliver policy change.

In addition, they will be a proven people manager.

The candidate will also possess strategic thinking, analytical, planning and communications skills; experience of managing budgets within a global organisation, and will be a strong collaborator and team player with a deep commitment to ONE’s goals and priorities.

They may oversee our advocacy efforts across other campaigns.


  • Lead ONE’s overall work in the UK, including overseeing all relevant components of the ONE’s campaigns as they pertain to the UK (media, campaigns etc as well as policy and advocacy), working closely with CEO, SLT and other colleagues across the organisation.
  • Identify ONE’s core Ministerial and parliamentary targets, and lead on managing relationships, including at the highest level and implementing a strategy to build/rebuild relationships, including at the highest level.
  • Identify and manage relationships with senior officials and other relevant senior-level stakeholders in support of ONE’s objectives.
  • Lead all policy & advocacy work for UK and work with colleagues, including members of the policy team, to ensure an effective policy and advocacy strategy for campaigns, including managing relationships with relevant external lobby and campaigning groups, preparing documents on specific development issues for a range of stakeholders, lobbying targets and audiences and crafting articles for blog posts, briefing documents and talking points 
  • Support the team to/oversee the work of the policy team in policy and political analysis on UK development policy issues, and provide UK perspectives to ONE’s global policy discussions, ensuring global positions are compatible with the UK 
  • Build, manage, and strengthen new and existing partnerships with unusual voices in support of ONE’s objectives. Manage relationships with actors who can support our objectives including think tanks, research organisations, political allies, business groups, etc.
  • Represent ONE at high-level meetings as required, and/or ensure that other ONE representatives are properly briefed
  • Support the team to organise events as required to advance ONE’s UK policy and advocacy objectives, including in parliament, at UK Party Conferences, and other high-profile moments
  • Work closely with European Country Directors to deliver an effective UK component to ONE’s European and global strategies
  • Lead the UK team, including line management of senior team members. Serve as an inspiring leader and coach, manage performance, and help create a learning environment for the team ensuring team members have clear roles and responsibilities, and the resources to fulfill their objectives.
  • Be fiscally responsible for the development and management of the UK budget, ensuring the budget is in line with the strategic plan and used in line with established processes and policies.
  • Be responsible for resource allocation, including spending and hiring of staff in line with established processes and policies.
  • Work closely with the communications and media staff across the organisation to develop effective communications strategies for ONE in the UK
  • Act as the lead UK media spokesperson where required, including for national and international media outlets. Working together with ONE’s media teams, provide on or off-record briefings to journalists and other media actors.
  • Engage in ONE’s work across Europe to strengthen advocacy skills and MEL around advocacy, including by providing training, coaching and mentoring to more junior policy and advocacy staff.
  • Any other duties as required by the organization including support for other countries and engagement in regional and global partnerships


  • Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience plus 5+ years’ in a management or lead capacity within international development, civil society, media or government
  • Experience of managing people and budgets, and directing team performance for maximum success
  • Advanced degree in international development, economics, business or a related sector
  • Significant experience of lobbying the UK Government with significant contacts in Government and the Opposition
  • Extensive experience of designing and implementing effective lobbying strategies which achieve policy change
  • Demonstrable high level PR and marketing skills and instincts
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with a wide range of partners; highly proficient at establishing strong partnerships across organizations and influencing stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Outstanding analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills
  • A commitment to ONE’s policy priorities and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work and of how policy change can be achieved through effective advocacy
  • The gravitas and judgment to represent ONE at high level meetings and conferences
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a rapidly changing environment
  • Proven interpersonal skills and a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration

Fluency in English required. Proficiency in other languages such as French and German is a plus.


Travel up to 10%.

GBP 85,000 – GBP 95,000 per year
