On behalf of its 2 million members in Europe, ONE welcomes the appointment of David M. Sassoli as President of the European Parliament.
Friederike Röder, EU and France Director at ONE, said:
“From passing transformative transparency legislation helping citizens hold governments to account for revenues from oil, gas and mining in Africa, to protecting and increasing life-saving EU aid in the EU budget, the European Parliament plays a vital role in ensuring that EU legislation makes it easier for the world’s poorest to lift themselves out of poverty. We are delighted that President Sassoli has already committed to realising the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals and achieving a world where no one is left behind.
With the necessary financial resources and policy commitments, eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 is possible, but only with the political will of European decision-makers. We are therefore encouraged that, like President Sassoli, 155 new Members of the European Parliament have already committed to help put an end to extreme poverty. We look forward to working with the President and the Parliament’s new intake to turn these commitments into concrete action, starting with adopting a long-term EU aid budget that’s fit for the future”.
