Following the Prime Minister’s speech on how the UK will leave the European Union, where Theresa May spoke of the importance of a ‘truly global Britain’, the ONE Campaign has highlighted the role international development has to play.

Saira O’Mallie, interim UK Director of ONE, said: “A truly global Britain must not turn its back on the world’s poorest people. The UK’s ‘profoundly internationalist’ nature is embodied by our aid budget.

“Global trade and development go hand in hand and are firmly in our national interest. Making the most of the opportunities ahead of us means helping others do the same.

“However, the UK must not seek to attract business by rolling back regulation designed to fight corruption, which keeps people poor.  

“Investing in the world’s poorest and most fragile countries now means a more stable future for everyone. That’s how we ensure that the prosperity, safety and security outlined by May is achieved.”
