EC pledge €370 million to Global Fund

The European Union has today announced new support of €370 million (over US $500 million) for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria for the period 2014-2016. The pledge was made at a conference in Washington, where donors are expected to set out their pledges for future support to fight against the three diseases.

Eloise Todd, Brussels Director at ONE said:

“€370 is a transformative pledge and one that Commissioner Piebalgs should be applauded for. The people of Europe can be proud of the millions of lives that will continue to be saved through the Global Fund’s crucial role in fighting global killers such as malaria, TB and AIDS. Increasing investment in the fight against these diseases in the context of a stagnant overall aid budget is a significant show of confidence in the Fund.

“We look forward to ambitious pledges from other EU donors tomorrow and hope that leaders and ministers the world over will grasp the opportunity to get closer to the beginning of the end of these three diseases”.
