Parliament isn’t just a place for elected officials dressed to the nines in smart clothes and shiny shoes — it’s a place for young people rocking black and white ONE t-shirts, too!
On September 25, ONE launched its first ever post-election ONE Vote Italy campaign with a parliament ‘take over’ by our Youth Ambassadors (YAs). We launched this important campaign on the 25th because it marks the third anniversary of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the first of which is ending poverty in all of its forms everywhere.
Our YAs met with 28 Deputies and Senators — as well as some Ministers — in Rome and asked them to sign a ONE Vote pledge. The pledge asked them to support the fight against extreme poverty by taking action during their mandate to ensure that Italian and European laws make it easier for the world’s poorest countries to empower their citizens to live free from poverty.
YAs also raised awareness of Italy’s vital role — as a member of the G7 and G20 and one of the biggest EU countries — to ensure that the world meets the 2030 deadline to achieve the SDGs and put an end to extreme poverty.
A successful campaign launch saw decision makers listening carefully to what young constituents had to say about their fight for a fairer world. YAs will now return to their communities across Italy to meet with even more members of Parliament!
Back home again, they’ll continue to use their voices by appearing in local newspapers to discuss the importance of international development and increased investments in Africa, reminding policymakers that constituents have international development issues at heart and want to see a world free from extreme poverty.
They say all roads lead to Rome, but, after this, we have hope the road from Rome will lead to the eradication of extreme poverty!
