‘ONE helped me become a better person:’ An Italian YA looks back at her time with ONE

ONE

Rebecca has been a ONE Youth Ambassador for two years in a row, in 2018 and 2019. Recently, she‘s finished her law double degree and works in an international legal office as a trainee lawyer.

How has ONE supported you to get to where you are today?

ONE helped me become a better person. When I was younger, I could not figure out who to be and what to do. I joined ONE just for fun because I felt like everything I was doing was without a purpose. The ONE family showed me that these things were not relevant, I could be whoever and whatever I wanted, but nothing would ever be more important than caring for each other — caring for every single human being and taking little actions matter in my daily life [to do so]. ONE taught me that my voice is important, and that’s why I work to help others to fight injustices and to make their voices heard.

What did you accomplish while being a ONE Youth Ambassador?

I accomplished so much that it‘s really difficult to summarize. I had the opportunity to talk at the Italian Parliament with the vice president sitting next to me, to meet about 50 deputies and senators to discuss extreme poverty and preventable diseases, to meet Alice Albright (GPE) and Peter Sands (Global Fund), to go to the European Parliament in Brussels to meet deputies there, and of course a lot of U2 concerts! Furthermore, I talked at meetings, universities, beach stands —everywhere to raise awareness about concrete problems. Everything I did made me a better citizen of the world and I hope it helped build a better world, too.

Is there anything else you‘d like to share about your time at ONE?

It was really an incredible journey, every time I start talking about ONE is like a trip down memory lane. I am who I am thanks to ONE and I want to thank everybody who has been part of this experience with me. I met many of my dearest friends during my volunteer program, so I would like to particularly thank them because they made me believe that change is possible if we act together.
