I remember the build up to the Gleneagles G8 summit and the start of the Make Poverty History campaign very clearly. I believed the world could be changed, and that I had a part to play in the movement to eradicating extreme poverty.

It was an exciting time, but there was always a feeling that however successful the campaign, the fight against poverty would need to be a long-term one. The slogan from ONE’s first promotional video jumped out at me and has stayed with me ever since, “we don’t want your money, we just want your voice.” Since then, I’ve been a committed to ONE’s fight. Can you spot the ONE logo in my band’s music video?

The idea that campaigning can bring about the kind of change that affects whole nations was something that really inspired me, and continues to inspire me today. I’ve never been rich and while I like to imagine that the small donations I make to development charities will help some, I hope that my actions campaigning can help millions of people.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the problem of extreme poverty. But ONE continues to provide us with opportunities to take simple actions that can, do, and already have changed the world for millions of people. This is what drives me to continue to be an active member!

The day when we all dressed up as UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and formed a giant ‘IF’ in London’s Parliament square, for the IF Campaign, was a great example of when people get together and do something extraordinary for change. The next day, the UK Government announced it would finally achieve a 43-year old target of allocating 0.7% of national income on overseas aid, one of the campaign’s main aims. It felt like a huge victory,  something that we’d all helped achieve.

So if you’re wondering why you should join ONE, it’s simple. If you think ending extreme poverty is a good idea, joining the movement will bring us one step closer to that goal. Join ONE.
