Ending AIDS video: ‘Never in my wildest dreams did I think the results would be this dramatic’

This new video from STOP AIDS shows just how far we have come since the pandemic first gripped the world just over 30 years ago.

Shaun’s story reminds us how many people have been living with HIV for decades, and the effect that anti-retrovirals had when they were first developed.

He says, “It was Christmas Eve 1986 and I had no idea what my future would hold.  It was a scary time… there wasn’t that much we could do about HIV. Our activism was a form of treatment.  By the time anti-retrovirals became available, it wasn’t a question of if we are going to get the treatment but when.”

Nokhwezi also saw anti-retrovirals turn her future around, “From by CD4 count being 3 in 2004, it is now 1,238 and my viral load is undetected.  I’ve seen ARVs working – I’m living proof that they are working.”

Dr. Francesca Conradie has been working in HIV research since 2000.  Four years ago, she worked on a study that trialled using anti-retroviral treatment as prevention.

She says, “Never in my wildest dreams did I think the results would be this dramatic.  A study that reduces HIV transmission by 96% is historic.  This is the most important prevention tool we have ever had.”

We really could end AIDS within a generation, but we need your help.
