Dear Prime Minister

We write as Members of Parliament who believe that the UK should maintain the strong global leadership we have demonstrated over recent years with respect to international development and global health. The UK ranks as one of the leading donors to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and this investment has helped to save 17 million lives since 2002. The Global Fund is supported by Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum.

Now more than ever, the Global Fund needs to accelerate its efforts and the UK will be critical to achieving this aim. With the replenishment conference fast approaching, we have an unprecedented opportunity to build on the progress to date in fighting the three diseases. My constituents back this effort, and so far more than 155,000 people have signed a petition calling on world leaders to ensure a fully financed Global Fund replenishment.

We have reached a tipping point whereby we have the chance to end the epidemics of AIDS, TB and malaria within our lifetime. In order to stay on the right side of this tipping point, the Global Fund has calculated that it needs to raise at least $13 billion during this replenishment. To reach this target, all donors need to be ambitious and increase their pledges by 20% – and many have already done so. In the continued spirit of leadership we urge you to increase the UK’s 2013 pledge by 20% and invest £1.2 billion to the Global Fund for the 2017-19 period. This would represent a 14% contribution to the total financing that the Global Fund is seeking to raise, reflecting the UK’s current share of ODA among OECD countries.

We know that the Global Fund is one of the best ways to improve the health of women and girls in the poorest countries and to reach vulnerable populations in fragile and conflict-affected states. We also know that an investment in the Global Fund represents good value for money, thanks to its high ranking in DFID’s annual review last year.

On behalf of my constituents here in the UK, and millions of the world’s poorest people whose lives would be transformed by this contribution, I urge you to pledge £1.2 billion to the Global Fund and ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of the fight to end these three killer diseases once and for all.

Yours sincerely,
